15 years before his Hollywood debut in “Intruder in the Dust”, the great black Puerto Rican actor Juano Hernandez was introduced to the world of cinema by Oscar Micheaux, dean of Race Cinema. These clips are from the Micheaux film “The Girl from Chicago” (932), in which Hernandez played Gomez, the Cuban numbers banker, whose murder by the “girl from Chicago” leads to the film’s climax. The clips are an invaluable record of Hernandez in his physical prime, when he was a leading light in the black theatrical world of the Thirties.
