Black World Cinema and South Side Projections Present a Back to School Sing-Along Screening of “THE WIZ” as Part of Their Ongoing Showcase of Classic and Seldom Seen Movies from Around the World
Black World Cinema is the sponsor of an ongoing movie showcase of interesting, exciting, and thought-provoking movies held at Chicago’s Chatham 14 Theater (210 W. 87th Street) on the first Thursday of every month. Each film is followed with a discussion hosted by Floyd Webb and other film and cultural scholars.
Black World Cinema’s next film, Thursday, September 4th at 7pm at the Chatham 14, is the 1978 classic “The Wiz,” a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wizard of Oz” but with an all-black cast in an urban setting. Attendees are encouraged to sing and dance along with the hit soundtrack featuring Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, and Lena Horne. Kids who show up in costume have a chance to win generous back-to-school gifts donated by a local Chicago business. Mainstream film, for all of its faults, is not the beginning and the end of what people have done and are doing behind and in front of the camera. There’s a huge and interesting catalog of motion pictures that give alternate viewpoints and deliver something special. Black World Cinema delivers prime choices from this world of interesting film to the Chicago area. South Side Projections is a local nonprofit organization that presents film screenings and discussions throughout Chicago’s south side. The organizations previously partnered on last summer’s Jim Kelly Day, a celebration of the films of the groundbreaking African American martial artist and actor.
