Join us in viewing the historic short film\u00a0<i>The Cry of Jazz<\/i>, made in 1959 in Hyde Park by the late Edward O. Bland, a University of Chicago alum and film music composer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The Cry of Jazz was selected in 2010 for preservation in the United States\u00a0<a title=\"National Film Registry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Film_Registry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Film_Registry&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505958831603000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEoM605N8XSro-YIqu5H9qstUzvIg\">National Film Registry<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a title=\"Library of Congress\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Library_of_Congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Library_of_Congress&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1505958831603000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFqrbElEPl4a3BPDWSXx0L9YaLTVg\">Library of Congress<\/a>\u00a0as being &#8220;culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.&#8221; An\u00a0early and influential example of African-American independent filmmaking, director Ed Bland made it with the help of more than 60 volunteer crew members. This docudrama intercuts live footage of Sun Ra with scenes of life in Chicago\u2019s black neighborhoods and a meeting of interracial artists and intellectuals engaged in debate around the nature of Jazz&#8217;s origins and its future.
