About The Film
\nIn 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, \u201cThe Hurt Locker\u201d) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington, \u201cRay,\u201d \u201cLift\u201d) and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone’s beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.<\/p>\n

1960s was a time of social and political change around the world. Many colonial nations established their independence during the 60s, finding new political footing. Other nations experienced significant political strife. In the US, a battle raged between the government and bourgeoning political groups advocating mostly for under-represented citizens. Among these groups the Black Panther Party (BPP), a political organization grounded in Black Nationalism and advocating for social change for African-Americans.<\/p>\n

The Fred Hampton Scholarship Fund
\nProceeds from this event will benefit Fred Hampton Memorial Legal Assistance Scholarship Fund, a 501c3 organization. The scholarship was established in honor of Fred Hampton, and initiated by the Rev. Jesse Jackson of Operation PUSH and the late Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy, to assist black students in the field of law. Each year, William Hampton, Fred Hampton\u2019s brother and president of the fund, presents the scholarship award to a deserving student in the Chicago area.
